The photobook "A Distant Memory" is a visual exploration of Cambodia through my lens, reflecting my journey as a first-generation Khmer-Canadian. Throughout my youth, I experienced a profound sense of longing and a feeling that a crucial part of me was missing. Raised by immigrant parents who deeply cherished their homeland, my childhood was filled with vibrant Cambodian stories—both joyous and challenging. Our home was adorned with Buddhist decor, Cambodian art, and the rich flavors and sounds of my heritage. These elements created a tapestry that both connected me to and made me question my sense of belonging.

As I grew older, these reflections became more intense, driving me to seek answers about my roots and identity. When I finally visited Cambodia, it was as though my past and present merged in a moment of clarity. The sights, sounds, and experiences resonated deeply, filling a void I had long felt. It was as if my younger self and my soul found the answers they had been yearning for.

This series of images in "A Distant Memory" is an intimate portrayal of my exploration into these personal and cultural questions. Through this photobook, I aim to capture the essence of a place that feels both familiar and distant, weaving together the threads of my heritage, family stories, and the journey of understanding where I truly belong.
